Geometrical aspects of superbrane dynamics

The geometrical (superembedding) approach is used as a tool for deriving from the worldvolume dynamics of superbranes field theoretical models exhibiting partial supersymmetry breaking. In this way we obtain nonlinear actions for Goldstone superfields associated with physical degrees of freedom of the superbranes.

Superbrane Actions and Geometrical Approach ∗

We review a generic structure of conventional (Nambu–Goto and Dirac–Born–Infeld– like) worldvolume actions for the superbranes and show how it is connected through a generalized action construction with a doubly supersymmetric geometrical approach to the description of super–p–brane dynamics as embedding world supersurfaces into target superspaces. During last years Dmitrij Vasilievich Volkov a...

Geometrical aspects in optical wave-packet dynamics.

We construct a semiclassical theory for propagation of an optical wave packet in a nonconducting medium with a periodic structure of dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability, i.e., a nonconducting photonic crystal. We employ a quantum-mechanical formalism in order to clarify its link to those of electronic systems. It involves the geometrical phase, i.e., Berry's phase, in a natural wa...

Geometrical aspects of protein folding

These lectures will address two questions. Is there a simple variational principle underlying the existence of secondary motifs in the native state of proteins? Is there a general approach which can qualitatively capture the salient features of the folding process and which may be useful for interpreting and guiding experiments? Here, we present three different approaches to the first question,...
